Tales Till Ramadan 2025

BIRMINGHAM REP, BIRMINGHAM

Thursday 13 Feb–Saturday 15 February 2025

Like the Ramadan crescent, sincerity can be elusive. With her sights set on sincerity, Eleanor Martin takes a journey of spiritual quest through a mesmerising collection of new and old Muslim heritage stories from Rumi, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Somalia and Iraq in this one woman show. Join Khayaal Theatre for this cultural odyssey in preparation for the sacred month of Ramadan featuring new stories from Bangladesh, Somalia and Rumi. Running time 90 minutes without intermission.

Merciful Encounter

A traveller takes a roadside nap under a tree only to be rudely awakened by a madman who subjects him to an ordeal whose purpose only becomes clear after much grief and toil. A tale by Jalaluddin Rumi, Time Magazine’s Mystic of the 13th Century.

 The Farmer’s Daughter

In the land of the poets where the hyenas prowl, a poor farmer places his hopes in the wisdom of his daughter to answer the riddle of a king. A tale from Somalia.

 The Doctor's Helper

A young man resorts to artifice in order to gain a menial position with a physician of great repute from the House of Wisdom. But at what cost will he keep that position? And what will the physician do to save his own reputation? A psychological thriller from Iraq.

 The Mouse and the Fakir

A fakir lives a life of peace and solitude on the banks of the Surma river until a mouse joins him. A series of metamorphoses ensues casting light on what it means to stay real. A tale from Bangladesh.

 The Sultan and the Robbers

A fun and unassumingly mystical folktale from Pakistan wherein a disguised sultan has an eventful night with a band of robbers, one of whom has a special talent that casts light on the nature of felicitous vision.

It was brilliant and captivating! I want to see it all over again this instant. An incredible experience.
